Alleged dumping of garbage into a privately owned pond in Rishipara under Ward No. 2 of the Kamalpur Nagar Panchayat in Dhalai district has sparked outrage among local residents, who have demanded immediate intervention by the administration to address the growing environmental and public health concerns.
According to local sources, a pond located beside the road in Rishipara, owned by Gautam Debnath, Kshitish Debnath, and Jagadish Debnath, has allegedly been used as a dumping site for various kinds of waste over a prolonged period.
Residents have alleged that the garbage is being dumped in the pond by the Kamalpur Nagar Panchayat after being collected from different parts of the town. They claim the continuous dumping has resulted in a foul smell across the locality, making the environment increasingly unhygienic.
Locals said the problem is affecting not only Rishipara but also nearly 150 families living in the adjoining Ward No. 1. They alleged that the accumulation of rotting waste has led to a rise in mosquitoes, flies, and other insects, increasing the risk of diseases, particularly among children and elderly residents.
Residents further alleged that when they protested against the dumping, they were threatened and warned of legal action. However, no official response from the Kamalpur Nagar Panchayat or the district administration had been received till the filing of this report.
The affected residents have urged the authorities to immediately stop the dumping of waste into the private pond, adopt an alternative scientific waste disposal system, and conduct a fair inquiry into the allegations. They have also called for prompt administrative action in the interest of public health and environmental protection.
