Tripura High Court gets Kureshi as new Chief Justice

Setting aside all speculations, the President today appointed Akil Kureshi of Bombay High Court as the Chief Justice of High Court of Tripura.

A notification regarding the appointment of Justice Kureshi was issued by the Ministry of Law and Justice in the morning.

Justice Kureshi was a senior judge of Gujarat High Court. Later, he was transferred to Bombay High Court. Justice Kureshi also served as Acting Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court for a short period, before he assumed his duties at the Bombay High Court. Thereafter, on May 10 last, the Supreme Court Collegium initially recommended the elevation of Justice Kureshi as Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court. On September 20 last, the Collegium modified its recommendation to appoint Justice Kureshi as Chief Justice of Madhya Pradesh High Court.

It had, instead, resolved to appoint Justice Kureshi as Chief Justice of High Court of Tripura. Justice Kureshi had once sent incumbent Union Home Minister Amit Shah to Police Custody for two days for his role in the Sohrabuddin case.
