A minor financial dispute over just Rs 30 escalated into a violent attack in the Kailashahar subdivision of Unakoti district, leaving a day labourer critically injured and creating tension in the area.
The injured man, Pradip Shukla Baidya, a resident of Bhodrapalli in Ward No. 6 of Samrurpar Gram Panchayat, is currently receiving treatment at Unakoti District Hospital. He supports his wife and two children through daily wage labour.
According to reports, Pradip was returning home after work when he was allegedly confronted by a local resident, Bidyut Malakar, near the Bhadreshwari Kali Temple in Bhoter Bazar. The dispute reportedly arose over a Rs 30 loan Malakar had given Pradip. When Pradip said he would repay the money the next day, Malakar allegedly attacked him from behind with a sharp weapon, striking his head. The attack caused a deep injury and severe bleeding.
In a desperate bid for help, Pradip sought refuge at the nearby village head’s house, but his family claims he was sent back home without assistance. His relatives and neighbours later tied cloths around his head to control the bleeding and alerted the fire and emergency services, who transported him to the hospital.
Hospital officials said Pradip received five stitches for his head wound. He remains in critical condition, reportedly unable to speak properly or eat. His family, facing severe financial hardship, fears they cannot afford advanced treatment.
The following day, Pradip’s wife, Champa Shukla Baidya, filed a written complaint at Kailashahar Police Station. Sources indicate the police initially showed little urgency but later registered the case. Local residents also allege that the village head may be attempting to shield the accused. Police have begun an official investigation into the incident.
