The Border Guards of Bangladesh has agreed in principle for construction of Single Row Fencing (SRF) within 150 yards of international borders as proposed by BSF except for the design part, BSF sources said.
“The BGB have agreed to allow construction within 150 yards of International Fencing. It is pertinent to mention here that the construction of fencing work in Sonamura area has been started in the year 2004 with a proposal to raise the fencing at a distance of 150 yards. Accordingly, the construction started and fencing erected in the areas where there was no population of minimum population. However, a law and order problem emerged in area, as the locals objected to the proposed construction due to dense population up to the zero line,” BSF sources told this reporter.
It is worthy to be mentioned here that In June 2016 last, Secretary Border Management visited Sonamura to stock note of the ground situation. A stakeholders meeting was convened then where it had been decided to construct SRF in the densely populated areas and composite fencing in the areas where there were no inhabitants in order to plug the gaps. A joint survey was also conducted by the local administration and the construction agency of BSF.
After completion of Joint survey, the proposal was forwarded to BGB for further concurrence. On the other hand, the BGB requested for joint survey by both Battalion Commander from BSF and BGB before recommending the case to higher authorities. This followed another joint survey by carried out by commandant 145 battalion BSF and Director 10 BGB in July 2017.
“The proposal was forwarded to higher authorities of BGB for approval after the battalion level joint survey. Only recently, the BGB had agreed for the construction of Single Row Fencing as proposed by BSF which would be highly beneficial for the border management in the area”, sources in the BSF said.
“A formal request will be sent to the state government for land acquisition. By that time, the BSF will chalk out the plans and design of SRF that will be erected in the borders” the sources added.
Notably, a local stakeholders meeting also took place today at NC Nagar in presence of the locals and representatives from civil administration, elected bodies and BSF. The entire issue had been demonstrated before the locals seeking their cooperation.
