Assam Rifles seizes foreign cigarettes worth Rs 5.1 Crores

AGARTALA:

In a major anti-smuggling operation, the Assam Rifles seized a large consignment of banned foreign cigarettes worth approximately Rs 5.1 crores near Chandrapur area in Agartala, Tripura.

Acting on specific intelligence inputs, Assam Rifles personnel launched a targeted operation and recovered 170 cartons of illegal cigarettes believed to have been smuggled into the country from across the Indo-Bangladesh border.

The seized contraband was subsequently handed over to the Customs Department for further investigation and legal proceedings.

Officials said the operation marks a significant blow to trans-border smuggling networks operating in the region. The Assam Rifles reiterated its commitment to curbing illegal activities and protecting the country’s economic interests by maintaining heightened vigilance along the sensitive international border.

This seizure comes amid increasing efforts by security agencies to crack down on cross-border trafficking of contraband goods in Northeast India.
