An international expert on environment and economy Prof. Giovanni Zurlini of Italy has praised the Government of India’s commitment for sustainable development goals while at the same time preserving and protecting the climate.
In his key note address in an international course on ecology and concerned socio economic factors organized in the Tripura University from November 19 to November 30, the internationally acclaimed expert and professor of University of Salento, Lecce, Italy also made a special mention of the role played by India in shaping the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).His speech resonated the the expression “Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas,” which translates as “Collective Effort, Inclusive Growth” and has been popularized by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, forms the cornerstone of India’s national development agenda.
The two –week course titled Global Initiate for Academic Network (GIAN) with theme on Social-economical-ecological Systems (SESs) for sustainable planning and management is funded by Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India and is organized by Department of Forestry and Biodiversity, Tripura University. There are about 25 participants attending the Course from different parts of the country.
Prof. Zurlini has also referred to the impacts of Climate Change at the Global level and suggested to take immediate steps to design developmental strategies in accordance with the international commitments as per Sustainable Development Goals. He appreciated that India was going the right way under the present political dispensation.
Speaking on the occasion Prof. V L Dharurkar, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Tripura University who was the Chief Guest of the inaugural programme, stressed on the need of protecting and preserving the climate and ecosystem.
“No civilization can prosper and protect its culture unless and until its environment and ecosystems are protected”, said Dr Dharurkar. He also lauded the support extended by the MHRD and appreciated the effort taken by the Department in organizing such a multidisciplinary course which is of great importance in the present context of Climate Change. He mentioned that the sustainability of the resources depends on balance between socio-economic development and ecology. He said, Tripura University will be having a future collaboration with several foreign universities of Global repute on similar issues.
The Dean, Faculty of Science, Tripura University, Prof. Sukanta Banik, expressed his views that the ecosystem is degrading day by day even at the local level as evidenced from the decreasing food diversity in local markets.
Course Coordinator, Dr Thiru Selvan Assistant Professor, Department of Forestry and Biodiversity welcomed the guests and the participants and gave an overview of the course. Dr Sabyasachi Dasgupta, HOD, Dept. of Forestry and Biodiversity, Tripura University spoke about achievements of the Department and mentioned that the PG courses offered in this Department is one of its kind in India and is of global importance.
