A young man on Monday died after sustaining a bullet injury at Indo-Bangla borders of Devipur under Belonia subdivision located under South Tripura district. The deceased identified as Jashim Miah was gunned down by BSF troopers posted in the borders allegedly as a hot altercation broke out between the BSF and the young man. The BSF, however, issuing a statement later said that incident took place while the BSF troops tried to prevent cattle smuggling in the borders and ordered a departmental inquiry.
According to reports, Jashim’s father Khaled Miah following his regular routine went to his fields located adjacent to the borders to set his cattle free for grazing. According to the statement of Khaled, some of the new troopers of BSF called him and thrashed him mercilessly. Soon, some of his locals spotted the matter; the BSF personnel let him go. On knowing the matter, Jashim ventured out of home fuming in rage to inquire after regarding the incident. But, soon news of his bullet injury reached his home.
When the locals rushed to the spot to shift him to the hospital, the BSF personnel did not allow that. Soon local police were informed and in the aftermath, he was shifted to Belonia hospital for better treatment but unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries lying in the hospital bed. Rattled by the incident, locals of the area staged a road blockade which was later lifted after police convinced the locals. The tragic end of Jashim’s life was unexpected for his mother who alleged that the BSF killed her son and demanded stern actions.
According to BSF, when the Jawans were discharging duty in the borders under Bir Singh Border Out Post they had spotted some suspicious activities in the borders. “Some people were damaging the border fencing to smuggle cattle. When the troops tried to prevent them, the smugglers become aggressive and attacked the Jawans physically. The smugglers were armed with weapons like chopper (Da) and wooden clubs (Lathi)”, said a BSF press statement.
In the meantime, the statement added, a large crowd gathered at the spot surrounding the BSF troops. Sensing imminent danger to life and property, BSF party resorted to fire a shot by pump action gun (PAG) in self-defense, resultantly all miscreants fled away from the spot and one miscreant identified as Jasim Miah.
The BSF has also ordered a departmental inquiry and lodged an FIR with the local police station in connection with the incident.
