Once neglected – the Sabroom town in South Tripura district bordering neighbouring Bangladesh is all set to become an economic hub for the rest of the North-East states, said Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb on Friday.
Deb on Friday laid the foundation stone for construction of the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) at Paschim Jalefa, Sabroom. It will be a Sector-Specific Economic Zone for Agro-Based Food Processing.
Deb said, “The Sabroom town which is all set to serve the Northeast region of the country was once neglected and people were deprived at large. Ever since the new government was formed in Tripura, it mainly focused to develop the Sabroom town in view of it having huge scope for developing the state and the North-East as a whole.”
Sabroom is the southernmost town of the State sitting on a highway that will connect it to Bangladesh’s port city of Chittagong.
He said, “Setting up of the SEZ at Sabroom would open new avenues and attract private sector investment considering proximity of the Chittagong Port which is located relatively closer to the State and construction of the bridge across Feni River in South Tripura which is underway.”
Meanwhile, Deb today said: “Along with the state’s lone SEZ in Sabroom town, the state also will soon have a Logistics Hub. The Logistics Hub will help the entire North East Region export industrial and food items via Chittagong Port transforming Tripura into a Gateway to the entire North East Region.”
“This Logistic Hub shall create Rs. 2000 Cr. business,” adding to this Deb said, “Construction of the bridge over Rover Feni, Logistic Hub, Integrated Check Post (ICP) and SEZ in Sabroom town shall also attract tourism at large and create employment opportunities.”
He said: "After the completion of the under-construction vital bridge over river Feni, the surface communication between the proposed SEZ and the Chittagong international sea port would be much easier. High-quality roads were also being constructed on two sides."
