Demanding immediate financial assistance for the traders of Battala market, CPIM state committee secretary Jitendra Choudhury criticized the government for the delay in providing aid to the affected traders.
Choudhury made the allegations while addressing the impacted traders in Battala market today.
"Battala, one of the main markets of the state, was devastated by a fire last Sunday midnight. Many traders have been adversely affected. It is shameful that, so far, no financial support from the government has been observed," he said.
West District Secretary Ratan Das and other leaders were also present during the discussion.
Choudhury added, "Many of those affected have shops containing raw materials and a significant number are permanent shopkeepers. Most of these traders do not have insurance. Despite the Chief Minister and the Mayor visiting the site after the incident, there has been no noticeable government support. Therefore, we demand the rehabilitation of the affected traders and the formulation of a master plan to introduce new safety systems in the market similar to the approach taken in Imphal where a multi-story building with various safety measures has been established."
He reiterated that CPIM stands in solidarity with the affected businessmen, emphasizing that many have established their independence in the market. Choudhury mentioned that a proposal will be submitted to the government for financial support from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF).
