Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha today announced that the state government has decided to increase the number of blood banks in the state.
“Currently, there are blood banks in every subdivision and district, and in the coming days, the number of blood banks will be increased further. In the last financial year, 42 thousand units of blood were stored in the blood banks across the state. To save the lives of dying people, the youth should come forward to donate blood voluntarily,” he said.
Dr. Saha said this while inaugurating the voluntary blood donation camp organized by the Tripura State Blood Transfusion Board at Pragya Bhavan in Agartala today.
Dr. Saha, who is also the Health Minister of the state, said that 1% of the total population’s blood needs to be stored.
“There is a time limit for storing blood. It cannot be stored for a long time. There is a specific time limit for this. Therefore, blood has to be collected while maintaining a balance between the demand and supply. Blood collection decreases for various reasons. We try to fill that shortage. I would like to appeal to everyone to donate the surplus blood in our body to save the lives of dying people,” said Dr. Saha.
In this regard, he urged the youth to come forward to donate blood more voluntarily so that there is sufficient blood stock in the blood banks.
The Chief Minister said that in case of road accidents, a lot of blood is needed.
“During surgeries or the delivery of pregnant mothers, blood is required. Therefore, at least 2 units of blood have to be collected before the operation. Also, blood is needed for cancer patients and Thalassemia patients. Therefore, it is necessary to always keep a stock of blood. About 15% of the population has negative blood. The Tripura State Blood Transfusion Board is always monitoring the blood stock. Currently, there are blood banks in almost all the districts of the state. In the future, initiatives will be taken to establish a separation unit system with more blood stock. There can be no greater donation than blood donation,” he said.
