The state government has announced a compensation of Rs 3 lakh to the bereaved family of Sushanta Ghosh, who reportedly committed suicide in the police custody at West Agartala police station yesterday.
Two police officials have been also suspended for dereliction of duty. Within the 24 hours of the incident, Sub-inspector Sanjit Debbarma and sentry Biswaroop Paul, who were on duty that night, have been suspended today.
BJP MLA Dilip Kumar Das, who paid a visit to the residence of Sushanta earlier this morning, assured them of all the support. Speaking to media he said, “I have personally visited the residence of Sushanta. I have interacted with the family members and assured them if financial support from the government since the deceased was the only earning member of the family. After discussion with the Chief Minister, it is finalized to provide a compensation of Rs 3 lakh. Accordingly, the family members have been informed”.
Das also added that Sushanta’s death was an unfortunate incident and from his side he would extend all the support to the bereaved family.
On the other hand, senior Congress leader Subal Bhowmik also paid went to Sushanata’s residence. Speaking to the media persons, Bhowmik demanded CBI inquiry in the case.
“Incidents like death in lock-up indicate as to what standard the law and order situation has stooped. A CBI inquiry should be commissioned to find out the truth” said Bhowmik.
BJP MLA Sudip Roy Barman also visited Sushnata’s residence and extended sympathy.
