Chaos hit Satchand block under Sabroom sub-division after the civil administration had to face an uneasy situation on Tuesday centering two rallies sponsored GMP-TYF and BJP Mohila Morcha respectively. The CPM’s tribal wings GMP and TYF had a pre-scheduled rally and deputation in the SDM office whereas the BJP’s women wing had approached the local Satchand block office to stage a gherao.
The GMP rally under the leadership of former MP Jitendra Chowdhury and MLA Prabhat Chowdhury was slated to meet in a deputation at the Satchand block office and place their demands to the SDM Tarit Kanti Chakma. But, the police personnel prevented the rally on the road citing law and order situation. The police reasoned that if both the rallies come in face to face confrontation it might turn hard for the police to control the situation.
Angered by the move, hundreds of GMP activists sat on the road and started chanting slogans against the police. Soon the SDM rushed to the spot and heard the grievances of the GMP leaders. He had also received the 11 point charter of demand handed over by the GMP leaders. The sudden sit-in demonstration on the national highway snapped transport links for some time but was restored within an hour.
On the other hand, by the time, the GMP leaders were in the sit-in, the Mohila Morcha leaders staged a gherao surrounding the Satchand BDO office and the BDO was held stay put by the women activists of the BJP. The SDM rushed to the spot and talked with the women leaders and convinced them to address their issues. The overall situation centering those two rallies turned highly volatile for sometime in the area.
