Tripura’s centuries-old ‘Kharchi Puja’ festival begins amid COVID restrictions

AGARTALA:

The North-East states of Tripura’s centuries-old ‘Kharchi Puja’ festival begins at the state’s erstwhile capital Puran Habeli’s Chaturdash Devta temple at Khayerpur in West Tripura district from Saturday amid COVID restrictions.

This is for the second consecutive year that the festival has restricted gathering of devotees in the temple due to the pandemic situation of the deadly Coronavirus.

With the ‘Jari Puja’ believed to be the beginning of the worship to the 14 Goddess in the temple the 7 days long worship has began with the royal priest in the temple performing rituals.

Usually thronged by thousands of devotees from the state and visitors from abroad during the seven days of Kharchi Mela centering the Kharchi Puja, the historical temple this year got to have a deserted look as no devotees and ‘bhog’ are allowed due to COVID-19 pandemic.

According to an agreement signed with Royal family of Tripura, the Tripura government has been bearing all the expenses of the festival for the last several decades.
