In a concerted effort to strengthen disaster response capabilities, Tripura today participated in a nationwide civil defence mock drill. The exercise in Agartala was held at the Umakanta English Medium School Ground under the West District administration.
The large-scale simulation, which featured earthquake and air crash scenarios, witnessed the active participation of multiple disaster response forces and volunteers. It aimed to demonstrate swift, coordinated action during emergencies, thereby boosting public preparedness and inter-agency cooperation.
West District Magistrate Dr. Vishal Kumar stated that the drill was part of a larger national programme that followed a high-level meeting involving Chief Secretaries and District Magistrates across the country.
“A total of 244 locations across India were selected for this exercise, and Tripura is among them. Civil defence mock drills are being conducted across all eight districts of the state with the involvement of civil defence volunteers,” Dr. Kumar said.
Participants in the mock drill included personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Assam Rifles, Border Security Force (BSF), Tripura Police, Tripura State Rifles (TSR), civil defence volunteers, National Cadet Corps (NCC), Apda Mitra volunteers, and various other line departments.
The simulation began with an earthquake scenario, where civilians were trained on appropriate safety responses during tremors, followed by rescue and relief demonstrations by the involved agencies. The second part of the drill simulated an air crash, focusing on evacuation protocols and the critical role of first responders.
Authorities highlighted the significance of community awareness and readiness in managing both natural and man-made disasters. As part of the drill, power supply in Agartala city was briefly suspended from 5:30 PM to 5:40 PM, as per administrative directives.
The exercise served as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and coordination in safeguarding lives during emergencies.
