Alertness by a local jeweller and swift police action led to the arrest of a 24‑year‑old man who tried to sell stolen ornaments at SB Jewellers opposite Kali Bari in Bishramganj Madhya Bazar on Thursday afternoon.
According to Officer‑in‑Charge Subimal Debnath of Bishramganj Police Station, the accused — Krishna Das, son of the late Kanu Das of Purba Nalchhar Baramura — walked into the shop around 2 p.m. carrying gold conch‑shell leaves, earrings, neck chains and several silver nupur (anklets). He asked shop‑owner Liton Banik for only Rs 4,000, arousing immediate suspicion.
While weighing the items, Banik discreetly alerted police. OC Debnath and second OC Mithun Saha rushed to the spot and detained the youth. Police estimate total value at “over Rs 1 lakh.
During interrogation at the station, Das allegedly confessed that he had stolen the ornaments the same day from Jayanta Laskar Jewellers in Nalchhar Bazar before taking a bus to Bishramganj’s busy weekly market to sell them.
Bishramganj police have circulated the suspect’s photograph to Melaghar Police Station and local traders for further identification. Das remains in lock‑up pending theft charges under relevant sections of the IPC.
News of the arrest spread quickly through the Thursday haat, drawing dozens of anxious jewellers to SB Jewellers. “Theft has always been a worry, but this incident shows how vulnerable we are,” said Ratan Saha, a goldsmith from nearby Tepania.
Police have urged shop‑owners to install CCTV cameras and maintain purchase‑registers for second‑hand ornaments. “Vigilance from traders like Mr Banik is critical,” OC Debnath added. “We will intensify patrols around the weekly market to deter such crimes.”
