Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar to replace Nripen Chakraborty at Khowai, MLA protests move

AGARTALA:

A decision taken by Khowai Municipal Council to replace the statue of former Chief Minister Nripen Chakraborty with another statue of Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar at Nripen Chakraborty avenue has drawn sharp reactions from the CPIM party and local MLA Nirmal Biswas who has protested the move sharply.

The protests from the CPIM party also assumes significance as barring very few occasions, a tall political figure like Nripen Chakraborty always gets less recognition from its own party. Even the party does not feel it necessary to observe the death and birth anniversaries of the former Tripura Chief Minister this year.

Coming down heavily on the decision of replacing the statue, he said, “we have no objection if a statue of Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar is installed here but at no point, the statue of the former chief minister should be shifted. I have already placed a protest letter before the AMC administrator—the SDM making my point clear”.

According to him, the sub-divisional magistrate had informed him that he would discuss the matter with higher authorities. It is also worthy to be noted here that the statue was inaugurated by former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar in 2010.
