The Department of Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs convened a review meeting today to address the challenges posed by the disruption of railway services in the state, focusing on controlling the stock and prices of daily essential food items in the open market.
Sources within the state government revealed that the review meeting, held at the Department of Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, involved discussions with representatives from the All Tripura Merchants Association and the Tripura Wholesale Grocery Merchants Association. The primary agenda was to devise strategies for regulating the stock and prices of essential food items amidst the recent disruption in railway services.
"The meeting, chaired by the department's director, Nirmal Adhikari, delved into discussions regarding the current stock of essential food products in the market, particularly focusing on wholesale aspects," the source stated.
During the deliberations, extensive talks were conducted on retail pricing, the potential for food imports from abroad, and other pertinent matters.
"The director urged the business representatives to coordinate efforts in transporting essential food items via road until normalcy returns to railway services in the state. Furthermore, he emphasized the importance of preventing any undue inflation in food prices within the state's markets," the source added.
Business representatives highlighted that the state currently possesses approximately a month's worth of food stock, supplemented by daily imports via road from external sources.
"In light of the situation, traders affirmed their commitment to ensuring stable supplies and prices of essential commodities in the upcoming days," the source continued.
Additionally, it was disclosed that, under the guidance of the food department director, sub-divisional authorities would conduct detailed reviews with relevant traders to enforce price control measures and regulate stocking at the sub-divisional level.
