Worried over the menace of wild elephants, the villagers from the foothills of Atharamura range of Teliamura sub-division on Thursday blocked the National Highway and sought the intervention of the forest department to get rid of the menace.
According to the report, the menace of wild elephants had started from December 9 in different parts of the Teliamura sub-division and seems to be a never-ending episode as it continued to cause sleepless nights for the villagers.
Following this the tensed villagers mostly women on Thursday assembled in front of the Sub Divisional Magistrate office in the morning and raised slogans demanding administrative action to prevent the entry of wild elephants into human habitations and adequate compensation to the villagers who have fallen victim to elephant ravage.
They alleged that forest and wildlife officials have not been doing enough to protect the agricultural field and properties of the villagers from the wild elephants. The irked villagers accused the forest department of not addressing their issue, despite being apprised about the same several times. The villagers stated that the elephants have destroyed all the belongings of the houses and they don't have any shed on the head to take shelter.
The protestors also demanded compensation for the victims, who fell prey to elephant rampage. After assurance from the administration to consider their demands, villagers withdrew the blockade in the afternoon.
Attack by the herd of elephants has become a regular feature in several villages including Maharanipur, Kapali Tilla, Karmakar Tilla, Office Tilla, Jum Bari, Bhumihin Tilla, Uttar Krishnapur, Chakmaghat, and other parts of the Teliamura Sub-division of the Khowai district.
