Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha on Monday inspected the ongoing restoration and beautification work of the historic pond at Madhya Para Chalaman Sangha near Prabhu Bari in Agartala and directed officials to complete the project within the next three months.
Accompanied by Agartala Mayor Deepak Majumder, Ward Councillor Ratna Dutta and senior officials, the Chief Minister reviewed the progress of the project and interacted with those engaged in the restoration work.
Addressing reporters after the inspection, Dr. Saha said the state government has undertaken a sustained initiative to revive old and neglected water bodies across the capital city. He noted that many ponds had fallen into disrepair over the years due to encroachment and lack of maintenance.
The Chief Minister informed that around 35 old ponds have already been restored or renovated as part of the government's urban rejuvenation drive. He said the Prabhu Bari pond, one of the city's historic water bodies, was freed from encroachment before restoration work began, adding that the project, estimated to cost around Rs 3.5 crore, is expected to significantly improve the surrounding environment.
Expressing satisfaction with the quality of work, Dr. Saha nevertheless instructed the executing agencies to accelerate the pace of construction so that the project can be completed within the stipulated three-month timeframe.
He said pond restoration forms an important part of the government's broader vision of preserving heritage while improving urban infrastructure and environmental sustainability. According to the Chief Minister, development projects supported through Smart City initiatives and external funding agencies, including the Asian Development Bank (ADB), are contributing to the transformation of Agartala.
Reiterating the government's commitment to public welfare, Dr. Saha said the administration remains focused on addressing civic concerns and improving the quality of life for residents through systematic infrastructure development and conservation initiatives.
