Bombs greet security men in anti-Cannabis drive

AGARTALA:

Security personnel from TSR, Police, Forest, and BSF local battalion were greeted with bombs, pelting of stones and an infuriated mob at Boxanagar’s Ghatighar area under Sepahijala district. The police later resorted to tear gas shelling in order to defuse the situation and continue their drive of destroying marijuana plantations at the banks of rivulet Bijoy, police said on Friday.

According to police sources, a team of police, TSR, BSF and anti-narcotic cell of Tripura police went to the area after being tipped off about a vast plantation of cannabis in the region. As soon as the police rushed to the spot and began to destroy the plantations grown in the banks of rivulet Bijoy, the locals started objecting to it.

The police team paying no heed to their objection continued their drive and at a point of time, the agitated locals, mostly belonging to the indigenous section, started hurling abuses on the police team. The team later crossed the rivulet and reached the next segment of the plantation and the problem began.

The locals started pelting brickbats and stones on the team. The situation turned highly volatile after some of the locals hurled hand-made grenades noticing the police team in order to push them back from their plantation. The police team readily retaliated and started tear gas shelling to disperse the mob. The locals observing the situation retreated and police completed the job of destruction.

SDPO Sonamura Biplab Das while speaking on the matter, said, “we have destroyed not less than 1 lakh 20 thousand new cannabis plants spread across 20 plots in the region. The estimated value of the destroyed plants would touch a sum near many lakhs”.

In the drive, BSF personnel from 74 battalion, TSR from 7 battalion, SP anti-narcotic cell Saraswati R also participated along with forest officials of the local range.
