Anurag Dhankar, Director General of Police of Tripura, on Thursday reiterated the unwavering resolve of the state police and allied enforcement agencies to confront the growing menace of narcotics in the region.
Addressing the gathering at the “Run for Nasha Mukt Tripura & Creating Awareness on New Criminal Laws – Nyaya Sanhita” programme, organised as part of Tripura Police Week, the DGP highlighted that intensified enforcement measures have yielded visible results. Cases registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act have risen by 11 per cent in 2025 compared to the previous year — a reflection, he said, of strengthened vigilance and sustained crackdowns on drug networks.
Presenting detailed figures, Dhankar noted that 32,700 kilograms of dry ganja were seized in 2025, a significant rise from 28,600 kilograms in 2024 — an increase of 14 per cent. The seizure of cough syrup bottles witnessed an even steeper surge, jumping by 145 per cent from nearly one lakh bottles last year to 2.46 lakh bottles this year.
The drive against illegal ganja cultivation also gathered unprecedented momentum. Nearly 32 lakh plants were destroyed in 2025, almost double the 16.47 lakh plants eradicated in 2024, marking a 94 per cent escalation in action against illicit farming.
The financial scale of the crackdown was equally striking. Narcotics valued at ₹858 crore were confiscated and destroyed in 2024. In 2025, that figure soared to ₹1,645 crore — registering an increase of nearly 93 per cent and underscoring the magnitude of the state’s anti-drug operations.
While celebrating these enforcement gains, the DGP emphasised that law enforcement alone cannot win the battle against substance abuse. Reducing demand, he stressed, is equally critical. Awareness campaigns aimed at steering young people away from addiction are essential to safeguarding not only individual lives but also the well-being of families and communities.
To reinforce grassroots engagement, Tripura Police, in collaboration with various state government departments, has been actively conducting awareness programmes in schools, colleges, institutions, and communities across the state.
