In a proud moment for Tripura's cultural and artistic community, noted Indian classical musician Dr. Jayanta Sarkar has secured an Indian patent for his newly developed string instrument, the 'Tripureswari Veena'. The patent, granted by the Government of India, marks a significant achievement in the fields of music, innovation and traditional craftsmanship.
Named after the revered Goddess Maa Tripureswari (Tripura Sundari), the instrument reflects a harmonious fusion of Indian classical music with Tripura's indigenous traditions, folk heritage and spiritual ethos. The invention has been designed to highlight the state's rich cultural identity while offering a fresh contribution to India's classical music landscape.
According to Dr. Sarkar, the Tripureswari Veena retains the essence of the traditional veena but introduces several innovative features inspired by Tripura's local art and craftsmanship. Developed with scientific principles such as resonance, vibration, acoustics, harmonics and wave motion, the instrument produces a distinctive tonal richness suitable for performing Indian classical ragas.
A defining feature of the instrument is its sympathetic strings, which vibrate naturally alongside the main strings, creating a fuller, more resonant and sustained sound. This enhances the musical depth without compromising the authenticity of the classical performance.
The patented design also incorporates modern advancements, including an adjustable bridge, precision fine-tuning pegs, lightweight wood-composite construction, a built-in piezo-electric pickup for amplified stage performances and digital tuning compatibility. Despite these technological additions, the instrument preserves the traditional appearance and acoustic character of the veena.
