In a heart-wrenching incident that has cast a pall of gloom over Tarapada village in Pathalia Ghat, Jampuijla block, a 3-year-old child, Rimai Debbarma, lost her life after accidentally drowning in a nearby pond on Tuesday morning.
Rimai, the only child of Pradip Debbarma and Shivani Debbarma, was left in the care of her grandmother while her parents went to the forest to collect bamboo shoots, leaves and vegetables — a means of livelihood for the family, who live in poverty.
Unbeknownst to the grandmother, the little girl wandered off while playing and tragically slipped into the water of a nearby pond. Her disappearance went unnoticed until a local man, who had been collecting sap from a nearby rubber plantation and came to bathe, spotted the lifeless body floating in the pond.
The villagers rushed to the scene and immediately took the child to the Bishramganj Primary Health Centre. However, the doctors on duty declared her dead.
The child’s body was later brought back home, where grief overwhelmed the entire village. Rimai’s parents, along with her grand father and mother, were inconsolable, repeatedly losing consciousness in their yard as mourners gathered to offer support and prayers.
