AGARTALA:

Tripura's century-old 'Puspavanta Palace', the official residence of 16 state Governors since 1972, is set to be transformed into a national-level museum and cultural center, said tourism minister Sushanta Chowdhury on Wednesday.

Chowdhury accompanied by the officials of his department on Wednesday visited the palace, also known as a memorial of world poet Rabindranath Tagore to take stock of the situation of the palace.

The palace was built by British Architecture Company Martin and Burn 101 years ago, and with the shifting of the Raj Bhavan, it would now be turned into a museum and a tourist spot.

During his visit the minister said that once a national-level museum and a cultural centre is established in the 'Puspavanta Palace', it is expected to become one of the major tourist attractions in Tripura in the coming days. He said that the government is committed to protect the cultural heritage of the state and accordingly took several initiatives to develop this heritage building as Maharaja Birendra Kishore Manikya Museum.

The museum and cultural center will house the rich cultural heritage of the Northeast, fine arts of Southeast Asia, contemporary photography, national and international archives, etc. It will be built to withstand any adverse weather conditions. The entire museum will be 'monitored' with CCTV.
