The standoff between BSF and BGB troops over the nationality of a mentally challenged woman stranded at a sandbar of river Feni located at the Sabroom subdivision under South Tripura district has, of late, come to an end.
According to sources in the Border Security Force (BSF), the 32-years-old woman has been identified as Shahnaz Parvin and she belong to Bangladesh’s Kurigram district after 20 days of being stuck in the islet.
“The identity of the Woman was revealed from the higher authorities of Bangladesh after a number of media reports published explaining her plight. According to our inputs, The Bangladesh people collected the Swab samples of the woman in order to ascertain whether she is exposed to the deadly COVID 19 or not”, said he.
He also further added that she was still sitting in the sandbar and their Bangladesh counterpart was eager to receive her back once the tests were conducted. Some of the sources told this reporter that the woman would be shifted to isolation in her native district within some time.
According to reports, she hails from the Daikhaoarchar village that falls under the jurisdiction of Ulipur Upajilla of Kurigram district. Her parents are identified as Hatem Ali Seikh and Umela Khatun. Sources also said that she had gone missing two years back from her residence due to her instability.
It is also worthy to be mentioned here that the woman had been denied entry by the BSF personnel guarding the borders on April 02 last. And, when she tried to retreat she was pushed backward by the bordering villagers of Bangladesh. Since then, she was stranded in the islet in the no man’s land over River Feni. Meanwhile, a number of meetings had been conducted time by time between BGB and BSF authorities regarding the issue.
According to a local villager, both the BSF and BGB officials offered food to the woman. After a couple of day, she refused to take food offered by the BSF officials and preferred to take the food offered by BGB. “Since then we understand that she came from Bangladesh side and tried enter India through Sabroom”, said a local.
