Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha on Thursday inaugurated the state level celebration of the International Women’s Day here at Agartala Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhavan and said that the government has given special importance to the socio-economic development and self-empowerment of women of the country.
Addressing the gathering the Chief Minister said that the government is always trying to deal with crimes related to women. He said, “According to the latest NCRB data, Tripura ranks 8th lowest in the country in terms of physical assault and crimes against women. A toll free 'Women Helpline' number 181 has been launched in the state to ensure safety and protection of women and for their immediate assistance.”
The Chief Minister said that the state government has formed 53,623 self-help groups in the state under the Tripura Rural Livelihood Mission (TRLM) scheme to empower women financially. In the financial year 2017-18, only Rs 32.67 crore was disbursed to self-help groups in the state. 714 crore 16 lakh rupees have been paid there since the financial year 2018-19.
In terms of bank loans, Rs 4 crore 95 lakhs have been disbursed before 2017-18 and Rs 1465 crore 81 lakhs have been disbursed since 2018. Due to the efforts of the present government, Risa made by Janjati Mothers of self-help groups and famous Peda Prasad of Matabari got the GI tag, he added.
The Chief Minister also said that more than 41.4 per cent women in the state are involved in various businesses through startup schemes. The government is taking plans and working to provide quality education to the girl students of the state, he said, adding that admission fee, college development fee and examination related fee are waived for students studying at undergraduate and postgraduate level. Free bicycles have been distributed to about 1 lakh 22 thousand 509 students studying in class IX. In addition, loans have been provided at only 3 percent interest rate for female students pursuing higher education in national level educational institutions, he added.
Meanwhile, the state Social Welfare and Social Education Minister Tinku Roy highlighted the programs undertaken by various departments across the state for a period of one month on the occasion of International Women's Day celebration. He also highlighted various plans of the Department of Women and Child Welfare.
21 women and 3 self-help groups were awarded by the Department of Social Welfare and Social Education for excellence in their respective work at the state-level event on Thursday.
