District and Sessions Judge Court of Sepahijala district has awarded a man with three-year rigorous imprisonment sentence and fined Rs 50,000.
The ruling comes after an incident on June 27, 2020, where Kanai Debnath allegedly assaulted Debbrata Sharma, a minor over a dispute regarding access to drinking water.
Reports indicate that Debbrata Sharma, the son of Monika Sharma was fetching water from a supply point in front of their Kumaria Kocha village residence located under the jurisdiction of Melaghar police station around noon on the fateful day. Eyewitnesses claim that Debnath forcefully lifted the minor boy onto his shoulders and callously hurled him onto the road. This brutal act resulted in a severe shoulder injury with Debbrata's bone being fractured.
In the aftermath, the injured boy was urgently transported to the Primary Health Center at Bairagi Bazar. Due to the gravity of his condition he was subsequently admitted to GB Hospital in Agartala for specialized treatment. Debbrata's rehabilitation has been ongoing at the hospital for an extended period.
Shockingly, neither Kanai Debnath nor any of his family members extended any form of assistance or support to the victim during this arduous period. In light of this Monika Sharma, the mother of Debbrata initiated legal proceedings on July 22. After an extensive legal process, the case reached its culmination in the District and Sessions Judge Court of Sepahijala district.
Presiding Judge Subhradeep Saha, after careful consideration, pronounced the verdict, finding Kanai Debnath guilty of the assault. In addition to the three-year imprisonment term and Rs 50,000 fine the accused has been ordered an additional six months of imprisonment without labor if nonpayment.
