CM Dr Manik Saha seeks DoNER’s intervention in boosting tourism in Tripura; attends 2nd meeting of NE Council’s tourism forum

Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha on Wednesday attended the 2nd High-Level Task Force meeting of the Ministry of DoNER and sought financial assistance from the Ministry to further boost tourism in Tripura.

During the meeting, Dr Saha highlighted the need for comprehensive central assistance and strategic planning.

The high-level virtual meeting was held under the convenorship of Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma. Union DoNER Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia and other members of the task force were also present in the meeting. Representing Tripura, Chief Secretary J.K. Sinha, Principal Secretary of Tourism Uttam Kumar Chakma, and Secretary of Industries and Commerce Dr. Shailesh Kumar Yadav were present.

In the meeting Dr Saha emphasized that North East India has tremendous potential for tourism and called for integrated planning to tap into this potential. He suggested inclusion of tourism in the East and South-East Asia Industrial and Investment Corridor, focusing on eco-tourism, adventure tourism, and wellness tourism, alongside local cultural promotion.

The CM also presented proposals for developing key tourist circuits in Tripura, including new ropeway projects at Unakoti and Chabimura, a luxury tourist train, and strengthening tourism infrastructure through the PM-DevINE scheme.

He urged the central government to include Tripura in special tourism initiatives to make the state a prominent destination. Dr. Saha thanked the Union Government for their ongoing support and reiterated Tripura’s commitment to working collaboratively for the development of the entire North Eastern region.

During the meeting, Dr Saha mentioned that former Indian cricket team captain Sourav Ganguly has been appointed as the brand ambassador of Tripura Tourism. He emphasized the importance of organizing major festivals in the state to promote tourism and attract visitors.

To improve air connectivity as part of tourism infrastructure development, a team from the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and the Ministry of Civil Aviation recently conducted a site visit and inspection at Kailashahar Airport under the leadership of Regional Executive Director of AAI.

The Chief Minister further informed that Tripura Tourism Development Corporation currently has 29 identified tourist circuits. Efforts are underway to establish luxury hotels, such as the Taj Group's upcoming property, for which the Tourism Department and Indian Hotels Company Limited have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). These initiatives aim to attract private investments in Tripura’s tourism sector, he added.

The Chief Minister expressed his vision of transforming Tripura into a prominent tourist destination through both infrastructure development and strategic promotional efforts.
