A Max car reportedly involved in cattle theft met with an accident on Tuesday morning in the Amtali area under Bishramganj Police Station, sparking panic among local residents and cattle owners.
According to eyewitnesses, the Max vehicle bearing registration number TR01D-2010 was speeding towards Sonamura after allegedly stealing two cattle. The vehicle lost control and rammed into a tree, resulting in a major crash. On hearing the loud noise, locals rushed to the spot, only to find one of the cattle dead and the other severely injured. One of the animals reportedly fell into a roadside drain during the collision.
The driver and co-driver of the vehicle abandoned the car and fled the scene immediately. Police from Bishramganj Police Station arrived shortly after being informed and launched a preliminary investigation. The injured cattle was rescued using a dredger and later shifted to a veterinary hospital for treatment.
Locals estimate the market value of the deceased cattle at around Rs 1.5 lakh. Police also recovered a lungi and a pair of pants from the abandoned vehicle, which may belong to the fleeing suspects.
Initial findings suggest that the stolen cattle were being transported toward the India-Bangladesh border, possibly for illegal cross-border trade. The incident has intensified fear among local cowherds, as similar thefts have been frequently reported in different areas under the jurisdiction of Bishramganj Police Station.
