Former PCC president Birajit Sinha has on today welcomed the verdict of the High Court of Tripura on Kailashahar civic body. The High Court in it’s judgment nullified the post of Vice-Chairman of the civic body. Hailing the judgment Sinha said that it was a moral victory for the Congress party.
Reportedly, in the year 2015 elections were held for the Kailashahar municipal council. In the results, the then ruling CPIM party bagged 13 out of 15 seats and the rest of the others went to independent candidates supported by Kailshahar unnayan Mnacha.
Later on, both the independent candidates joined the BJP in the year 2017. And, after the by elections held after the assembly elections, the ruling BJP succeeded to win majority of the seats and formed the board in participation of both the independent candidates and Nitish Dey , who won from an independent ticked was made the vice-chairman of the council.
But, the Congress party argued that if an independent elected member wish to join a separate political party was needed to resign from his or her existing post, as per the rules of civic body. In this regard, a PIL was moved in the High Court thereafter seeking its intervention on the matter.
Reacting on the issue, formed TPCC president and veteran Congress leader Birajit Sinha said, Nitish Dey had also contested in the 2018 assembly elections despite being an independent member of the civic board. His post was occupied in a completely farced manner, Sinha alleged.
