The anti-Bru resettlement protests in Tripura’s North District have turned seriously violent with one protesting civilian being killed as police opened fire on the protestors on Saturday at Panisagar.
Sources said, not less than six more persons including TSR, police and fire brigade were grievously injured and under treatment in the hospital. The civil administration in order to control the situation enforced section 144 in the Panisagar sub-division and heavy deployment of police, TSR and CRPF was ensured to avert further deterioration of the situation.
According to local sources, Srikanta Das, a carpenter by profession was among the protestors. He was shot dead by TSR personnel who left as many as four more people seriously wounded with bullet injuries. None from the police or civil administration could be reached out for a comment on the violent confrontations between police and protestors.
According to eyewitnesses, several motorcycles were reduced to ashes, a fire engine vehicle was burnt and a police vehicle was torched by the protestors. The aggrieved mob also thrashed an on-duty fire brigade official while discharging his duty and left opens on the road. Later, the TSR rescued the fire troop and shifted to the nearby hospital.
Those who have closely witnessed the violence also said, “these protests have turned seriously violent and today’s incident may help the protests gain more momentum”.
On the other hand, protests were still on and the national highway between was blocked by the agitators till filling the report.
Chairman of Joint Movement Committee, the apex organization that was spearheading the movement, Dr Zairemthiama Pachuau said, “the protests were peaceful but when police opened fire the entire situation turned violent”. The JMC held the police and administration responsible for the entire violent episode.
