Rashtriya Purvottar Nattya Samaroh inaugurated at Agartala Town hall today in presence of Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, ICA minister Bhanu Lal Saha, Chief of TIE Wing Chief Abdul Latif Khatana (Delhi) and Director of NSD TIE Tripura Wing Vijay Kumar Singh.
The opening play was Girish Karnad’s classic work Nagmandala. A young efficient theatre group Udari Actors at Work from Hariyana, Rohotak presented the play directed by Praveen Rathi.
The play begins with conflict where Rani a young bride faces rejection from her husband Apanna. In order to attract him Rani plans to drug him with a love root in his milk which goes somewhere else and a Naga gets it.
Naga who can transform himself into a human being builds an intense relationship with Rani which gets her pregnant.
The news breaks to Apanna and a Panchayat is being called where Rani is asked to prove her fidelity where the play takes another turn with conflicts between Naga, Rani and her husband Apanna.
The overall interpretation is a contemporized version in today’s society, where gender bias discriminations are taking high holds. Although it is not an adoption but the director kept the classical structure yet he used it in the form of reality to depict the situation of society. The Natya Samaroh will continue till October 26 at Agartala Town Hall.
