Entire medical fraternity of the state today broke into protests followed by a scathing attack on an on-duty medical officer at IGM hospital premises. All doctors’ organizations called for suspension of private practice in the aftermath pitching warnings of mass resignation.
Reportedly, Dr. Dipankar Debnath, a Gynaecologist in the IGM hospital— one of the city’s premier hospitals was attacked severely by a mob in the wee hours of Thursday for alleged wrong treatment. Dr. Debnath was dragged out of his chamber in the hospital and was beaten severely by wooden faggots and other blunt devices. The private security staff of the hospital tried hard to overcome the situation but it was all the way ill-equipped to tackle the mob frenzy, according to eyewitnesses.
Dr. Debnath in his attempt to free himself ran out of the hospital premises and hide under the under construction cover drain but failed. Catching him once again, the mob continued their inhuman torture on the empty-handed doctor. After getting information from the hospital authorities the police officials, in no time, reached the spot and recovered him unconscious. Five persons were also arrested from the spot.
According to police sources, Mampi Das (20) wife of Govinda Das was admitted at IGM with ‘Preterm labour’ but her condition deteriorated and when Doctor informed the family members about critical condition of the patient, Govinda Das along with others started threatening the Doctor. At around 11.45 pm last night, the patient collapsed which aggravated Das further, however, in presence of Police, family members were convinced and left the Hospital. But, the relatives of the deceased started to gather in the hospital premises since last night and carried out the attack in a well planned manner.
The Chief Medical Officer of IGM filed an FIR with local Police and alleged that Govinda Das attempted to kill Dr Debnath. In the FIR, the CMO alleged, Dr Debnath was abducted forcefully outside the Hospital with a ‘willful intention of killing him’. Dr Debnath received multiple grievous injuries all over the body and head. The doctor, however, was admitted to the GBP trauma centre and right now under observation in the ICU. Health Minister Sudip Roy Barman also rushed to hospital after the incident.
Meanwhile, All Tripura Government Doctors’ Association and other such bodies condemned the incident. In order to make a strong statement against such moves, all the doctor organization jointly staged a “Dharna” in front of the IGM hospital. Tying black ribbons in shoulders the doctors called for suspension of private practice. “If necessary actions are not taken, all the organizations that jointly staged the Dharna have decided to render mass resignations” said ATGDA General Secretary Rajesh Chowdhury.
Meanwhile, eminent Gynaecologist turn politician MLA Dilip Kumar Das told us, there is a term in the medical books known as “sudden obstetric death”. As per my knowledge, death of Mampi Das was because of that. But, whatever has taken place after the incident can never be justified. Such inhuman behavior with a doctor is entirely a new experience for me, he added.
Another eminent physician Dr. Ashok Sinha also echoed the same. Expressing his anguish, Dr Sinha said, no matter what are the reasons, as a human being nobody can support such inhuman behaviors. It was almost an incident of lynching. The Chief Minister has assured me that strict action will be taken and no one will be spared.
