Tripura's tea industry has witnessed an unprecedented surge in production during the financial year 2022-23, with an impressive record of 90 lakh kg of tea leaves produced, as announced today by Chairman Santosh Saha of Tripura Tea Development Corporation.
This remarkable achievement is attributed to the collective efforts of 22 tea factories operating within the state. The surge in tea production has also resulted in a significant reduction in imports, bolstering Tripura's financial position.
In a bid to further strengthen the tea industry, the State Government has taken important steps, including entrusting the management of two tea estates, Lakshiganga and Teppanyalunga located at Bamutia. This strategic move enables the distribution of Tripura's tea leaves to markets beyond the state, contributing to overall economic growth.
Moreover, the government has demonstrated its commitment to the well-being of tea workers by distributing land rights to long-term workers. As a result, 2000 workers have already benefitted from this groundbreaking initiative.
To foster the tea sector's development, the TTDC has proposed a modernization project for the Brahmakunda tea factory in Simna to the North East Advisory Council (NEAC). Substantial funds of Rs 2 crore 3 lakh for the first phase and Rs 98 lakh for the second phases have been secured. The Department of Rural Development has been entrusted with the modernization task and has invited tenders for the project.
In line with the aim of expanding production capabilities, the establishment of a mini tea factory in Machmara is underway. The foundation stone has already been laid, and the Tripura Industrial Development Corporation is overseeing the project. By the end of August, tenders for this promising venture will be invited.
