Tripura Police on Wednesday arrested an Inspector of its traffic unit for allegedly embezzling Rs 74 lakh from the Bishalgarh Traffic Police Unit under Sepahijala District.
Speaking on the matter, Additional Superintendent of Police, Sepahijala District, Rajib Sutradhar on Wednesday said that during traffic enforcement, the police collect fine money and during reconciliation, they observed that around Rs 74 lakh was missing.
"Accordingly, when we started searching for it, we found that it was not deposited in the government exchequer from the Bishalgarh Traffic Unit. Traffic Unit Inspector Amarjit Debbarma, who was responsible for the collection and deposit of the funds, initially claimed that he had submitted the amount. However, during our internal investigation, we discovered that he had concealed the matter, and the funds were embezzled. We gave him ample opportunity to return the money, but he failed to do so. For this misappropriation of government funds, we registered a case against him at Bishalgarh Police Station, arrested him and produced him before the court, seeking three days of police remand," he said.
He further informed that the accused Inspector had been posted in the Bishalgarh Traffic Unit since 2023 and had not submitted the funds collected from eight challans.
"We will ensure whether any other person is involved in this or not," he added.
