A huge contingent of police went to recover smuggling-ready cannabis from an interior area of Melagarh sun-division late on Thursday night faced vehement confrontation from the locals prompting the police team resort to blank firing, police said.
According to local sources, the police from its secret source came to know about a huge consignment of cannabis being loaded in the vehicle to get smuggled at Padmalochan area—a remote village located under the jurisdiction of Melagarh police station. The area, the police source said, was located in a strategic point as all the three police stations—Bishramganj, Melagarh, and Sonamura share the jurisdiction borders.
However, acting on the tip-off, a team of Melagarh police station under the leadership of Additional Police Super Melagarh rushed to the spot and succeeded to confiscate the vehicle and the consignment. None of the involved persons could be found on the spot as all of them escaped on knowing about the arrival of the police team.
SP Chakraborty said, “The team seized the Bolero Pick Up vehicle in which the cannabis was being loaded. The left over packed cannabis was also seized. But, when the team was returning with the seized materials—an agitated mob retaliated and attacked the police team”.
The locals who could not recognized due to the dark of the night and face covers, attacked the police team with wooden faggots, clubs, spades, shovel and other primitive weapons. Some of them also pelted brickbats which left one of the drivers injured.
“One of our driver who was driving our rented vehicle sustained injuries after some of the brickbats hit on his body that stormed inside the window glass. After finding no other way out to disperse the mob, our team fired in open to disperse them. After the miscreants fled, the police team returned back to police headquarters with the seized materials”, said Chakraborty.
On being asked specifically on any arrests, he informed this website that no one had been arrested yet in this regard but the investigation was underway.
