The state food and civil supplies minister Sushanta Chowdhury on Wednesday said that the BJP-led coalition in Tripura procured a total of 131279 MT of paddy directly from the farmers across the state at Minimum Support Price (MSP).
In response to the query of the CPI-M MLA Jitendra Choudhury on Wednesday in the winter assembly session, the minister said that the paddy was procured during the three financial years of 2020-21, 2021-22 and 2022-23, where at least 67178 farmers across the state were benefited.
The Food Minister said that under the decentralized procurement system of the central government, the state government purchases paddy directly from the farmers and distributes the rice produced by milling by the empanelled millers through the public distribution system.
He said that the amount of rice provided annually through FCI by the central government for the public distribution of the state is adjusted with the amount of rice received from the procurement.
The price of paddy to the farmers is first paid from the Cash Credit Fund of the Food Department directly to the bank account of the farmers and later this amount is reimbursed to the Food Department by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution of the Central Government, he said, adding that FCI has no direct role in purchasing paddy in the state.
