Students appealed to riders to wear helmets

AGARTALA:

Students of the Government Degree College in Dharmanagar on Saturday appealed to riders of two-wheelers to wear helmets and follow traffic rules to road accidents.

The students of the college took out an awareness campaign in Dharmanagar to stress the need of following traffic rules to bring down the alarming rise in road accidents in North Tripura district.

They distributed flowers among pedestrians and vehicle drivers, reminding them to drive carefully and stay within speed limits.

The rising number of road accidents across North Tripura district is a reason for grave concern for the traffic department, which has been taking different measures to curb them.

Although traffic police are continuously engaged in checking documents and imposing fines for rash driving this has not been able to bring down the number of road accidents.

Despite this people continue to ride on pavements to get around traffic jams, drive in the wrong direction on one-way streets and jump traffic signals.

According to available data, two-wheelers were involved in a quarter of all road accidents taking place in the district.

Reckless driving has put at risk the lives of not only drivers and passengers, but also of pedestrians on the roads.
