There is a mad rush of shoppers to cloth stores in the city to buy the latest collections for Durga Puja. Shoppers have been continuously walking inside the popular markets besides shopping malls that witness a surge of footfall compared to previous days.
Profit margins of sellers of Hawkers’ Corner, Shakuntala Market, Metro Bazaar, Bazaar Kolkata, V2, Trends, Vishal to name a few have gone up as the number of customers, mostly government employees and shoppers from other districts increased today.
Shopkeepers of Hawkers’ Corner offered discounts on every purchase this season. The business is hot for shopping malls that house almost all items.
“We have witnessed the maximum customer footfall today though it will expectedly peak tomorrow also”, claimed Raju Das, a local garment seller of Sakuntala Road.
However, shoemakers like Bata, Khadims also have joined the league of Puja Sale.
Though, a section of people keep buying throughout the year via online mode, the craze for Puja Sale remains unchanged. With Puja Sale at HGB Road, the traffic jam has turned worst since afternoon with autos taking around 20 to 25 minutes to cross the Kaman Choumuhani-Post Office Choumuhani stretch that usually is a minute ride. The condition of MG Bazaar to Kaman Choumuhani and RMS Choumuhani to Jackson Gate route is same.
Meanwhile, security arrangements have been in place in the capital and CCTV cameras installed at prime locations. Additional Policemen have been deployed at the spot to maintain the crowd.
In Puja pandals, workers are giving final touches to the un-finished works. The mood of festivity and enjoyment will overwhelm devotees from tomorrow. From traffic jams in several parts of the city to huge rush of food lovers in restaurants, the picture of festivity will change the normal routine in the city.
On the other hand, the weather report has apparently brought good news for all the eyes waiting for one whole year for the auspicious occasion of Puja. Plans of fun will work out as they have been framed. Cloudy sky with possibility of mild shower is predicted in the state for Puja days. But as seen there was no effect of rainfall on the people.
