The unique attempt has been undertaken by a former chess player and a life time chess enthusiast—Nirmal Das. Speaking to the reporter exclusively, Nirmal Said, “The concept struck my mind when I took part in such a contest being hosted by some South Indian players. I had then decided to host a contest of my one in completely free basis. The online tournaments started from March 28 last four days after the lockdown with 15 to 16 players in a social media group. Now, I have many groups with players from faraway places”.
Replying to a query on the players status, he said, most of the players are playing from places Delhi, Kolkata, and North Eastern regions. By and large, there are players from almost all the Indian states, but the major section players are from the North East region. Some players are also playing in regular basis from South Korea, Bangladesh and Middle East countries who came to know about the game through our friend circle.
Moreover, he added, players like Sikha Dasgupta (66) and Anju Sarkar (76) who are once considered to be the top-notch players of Tripura participated in the online tournaments. Among the other notable players, FIDE master Prasenjit Datta, who has trained state’s chess prodigy Arshiya Das, had also donned the champion cap only recently, he informed us.
Regarding the results sheet, he said, everyday list of five top players are announced in the social media groups. The daily tournaments start every morning and the results come in the evening. Notably, Nishant Das, son of Nirmal also participates in the tournaments regularly.
