Tripura Police apprehended a man and seized cannabis worth over Rs 1 lakh in Khowai district on Tuesday.
Acting on a tip-off, personnel from Khowai Police Station intercepted a vehicle and discovered 62 packets of dried cannabis, weighing 49.5 kg, concealed in various compartments.
“Based on specific intelligence, we were informed that an XL6 vehicle transporting a significant quantity of cannabis would be crossing the state. In response, we deployed additional forces and initiated vehicle checks. Upon stopping the vehicle, a thorough search led to the recovery of 49.5 kg of cannabis,” a police official stated.
The arrested individual has been identified as Nirmal Das, a resident of Sidhai in West Tripura district. The vehicle originated from Agartala city.
“The cannabis was hidden inside a CNG gas cylinder inside the vehicle. The search and seizure operation was conducted in the presence of two government officials, the Deputy Collector & Magistrate (DCM) of Khowai and SDPO Khowai, Rohan Keshan, IPS (2022 batch). The driver of the vehicle has also been arrested. A case under the NDPS Act is being registered. The seized cannabis has an estimated market value exceeding ₹1 lakh,” the officer added.
