The state fishery minister Sudhangshu Das on Tuesday said that the government has targeted to make the state self-reliant in fish production and accordingly the government has taken multifaceted initiative to boost fish production in the state.
Speaking in the assembly on Tuesday, the minister said, “Fish farming has immense potential to increase income and bring economic prosperity. The present state government has taken various steps to make the state of Tripura self-sufficient in fish production.”
“State needs 27.83 kg of fish per capita every year. The state currently produces 85,805.68 metric tonnes of fish. After that there is a shortage of 31,481.78 metric tons of fish. Excavation of new ponds, renovation and rehabilitation of old ponds, provision of fisheries aids and training programs are being arranged to increase fish production,” he said, adding that the state has received Rs 192.86 crore in the last 3 years under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampad Yojana.
He said, “So far 17 hatcheries have been constructed under this scheme. 15 12 cage culture has already been set up in Dumbur reservoir to increase fish production. Rs 6 crores will be spent on the development of this reservoir. In addition, there is a system to compensate fish farmers due to natural or man-made causes.”
