At a time when the flood situation in Tripura is improving gradually, the state and food and civil supplies minister Sushanta Chowdhury on Friday said that the state has adequate stock of food items and fuel and there is no need to panic.
Addressing a press conference here in the conference hall of the civil secretariat on Friday evening, the minister said that presently in this odd situation, the food department is trying to ensure that no kind of anxiety is created among the people regarding the public distribution system.
A meeting was held today with various business organizations to maintain the stock of daily necessities in the open market. They have been called upon to ensure that no unscrupulous traders create artificial shortages of essential commodities and inflate prices, he told reporters.
The Food Minister said that the officials of the Food Department and the ration dealers have been asked to be active so that there is no shortage of products through ration in the public distribution system.
He further informed that under the public distribution system, the state currently has rice stock for 76 days, flour for 99 days, salt for 31 days, lentils for 16 days and sugar for 5 days. Adequate stock of food items are also available in the open market, he said, adding that the state currently has petrol and diesel for 9 days.
He however said that legal action will be taken against the traders, who attempt to raise the price of daily essentials abnormally taking the advantage out of the present situation.
Chowdhury said that 3,140 food packets have been distributed so far through the Food Department in various flood-affected areas in the stat. Also 8000 food packets have been prepared for distribution and another 7000 food packet have been stored.
