In a significant crackdown on human trafficking, the Government Railway Police (GRP), in coordination with the Border Security Force (BSF) and Tripura Police, arrested five alleged human traffickers from three localities in West Tripura district early Monday morning.
GRP Officer-in-Charge Tapas Das said that the arrests were made following a tip-off regarding the whereabouts of the accused. The joint operation was conducted in the Lankamura, Sharmalunga, and Sanmura areas under West Tripura district.
"The individuals arrested were wanted in connection with two ongoing human trafficking cases and had reportedly been absconding for quite some time," said Das. "A special team at the Agartala GRP Police Station is currently interrogating them. More arrests may follow as the investigation progresses."
The arrested individuals have been identified as Sumon Das alias Bikash (39), Rahul Das (27), Bishwajit Das (49), Anibesh Sarkar (31), and Jewel Sarkar (26). All are residents of the aforementioned areas in West Tripura.
They will be produced before the court later today for police remand.
