In a landmark judgment, Montaj Mia a notorious criminal with a history of cow theft, drug trade and other criminal activities has been sentenced to life imprisonment for his involvement in a brutal rape case. The verdict, delivered by Additional and District Judge Manbendra Debbarma marks the end of Montaj Mia's reign of terror in the West Khupilong area bringing relief to the local community.
The incident occurred on March 3, 2021, when a young woman was forcibly raped on her way home from Khupilong Bazaar. The victim reported that Montaj Mia had abducted her in an Alto car and assaulted her in a nearby forest. The survivor promptly filed a case at Killa police station, leading to an investigation headed by Officer Samar Das.
After thorough examination of the evidence, including the testimony of 15 witnesses, Investigating Officer Samar Das filed a comprehensive charge sheet against Montaj Mia. The case was then presented in court where government lawyer Pranab Deb represented the prosecution.
Following a fair trial, Additional and District Judge pronounced a life sentence for Montaj Mia, acknowledging the gravity of the crime and the need for justice. The verdict has been widely welcomed by the local community who had long suffered under the terror inflicted by Montaj Mia.
Speaking at a press conference, government lawyer Pranab Deb stated, "This judgment sends a strong message that the legal system will not tolerate such heinous acts. Montaj Mia's conviction is a victory for justice and a reassurance for the people of West Khupilong."
