A noted contractor associated with the PWD department had been forcefully abducted and thrashed by a group of miscreants on Friday. Later, narrating the incident, the contractor Pradip Chanda alleged that the group miscreants were working under the aegis of another contractor identified as Dipankar Dey.
According to reports, Chanda reached the PWD office for some official works at around 1 pm in the afternoon. On knowing the fact, the miscreants also reached there and asked him to come out. Sensing imminent trouble, Chanda refused to come out and remained inside the office. Aggrieved by Chanda’s refusal, the miscreants started abusing him verbally and at a point of time barged into the office room and dragged him out.
Later, Chanda said, he was thrashed in front of the PWD staff present in the office and was shifted to the BMS office. He tried to escape the place, but he was overpowered by them.
In the BMS office, Chanda was forced to put his sign on a blank piece of paper and he fainted as he was undergoing serious mental physical trauma at that point of time, he pointed out. Later, he came to know that he returned home boarding an e-rickshaw hired by the miscreants.
After initial recovery, Chanda lodged an FIR with the Kumarghat police station. In his statement, the contractor said, it was a murder attempt on him.
Sources said the incident was fallout of tender rivalry. The negotiation groups were hyperactive nowadays in the Kumarghat regions that were posing serious trouble for the genuine contractors when they tried to participate in the tender bidding process. However, simmering tension was brewing in the area after the incident.
