The Sub-divisional Magistrate (SDM) of Bishalgarh on Monday imposed section 144 CrPC at Charilam area under the Sepahijala district after the Congress-BJP face off turned violent centering the reopening of congress party office and joining programme in Charilam.
The incident took place after the congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman accompanied by the PCC president Birjit Sinha and other congress leaders along with the party supporters reached Charilam on Monday noon, As soon as they reached, the BJP supporters allegedly gathered in the event spot and started slogging against the congress.
Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman said, “The joining programme was prescheduled. When we reached there, we saw hundreds of BJP supporters holding saffron flags gradually gathering in front of the local Mandal office. As soon as our event started, they hit the streets to create chaos and disrupt our political programme.”
“On the other hand, the police prevented us from holding any event saying that they have received a complaint regarding violation of Covid-19 protocols. After the request, we were given fifteen minutes and the whole joining event was completed within 13 minutes,” Barman told reporters.
Barman however accused the ruling BJP of instigating violence across the state. He said, “Democracy is in stake under the rule of the BJP.”
Following the incident, the Bishalgarh SDM imposed section 144 in Charilam area on Monday to restrict untoward incidents.
“Initially, the prohibitory orders will remain in force for a couple of hours and once the situation stumbles back to normalcy, the orders will be withdrawn,” SDM told reporters. However, due to prompt police action no direct scuffle took place between the BJP and Congress workers.
