CM Dr. Manik Saha inaugurates Govt’s first English medium general degree college

Aiming to party quality education in the higher education sector of the state of Tripura the Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha accompanied by the state education minister Ratan Lal Nath on Tuesday inaugurated the government’s first English medium general degree college of the state here in the Agartala having 100 intake capacity.

Mayor of Agartala Municipal Corporation Deepak Majumdar, Director of Higher Education Department N C Sharma, Secretary Apurba Roy, College Principal Dipankar Chakraborty, and Aurobindo Society Chairman Pradip Nath among others were present in the function.

Inaugurating the college, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha said that a new chapter has been started in higher education in the state through the inauguration of this English medium college. He said that with an aim to make the state of Tripura a hub of education, the government is working to upgrade the academic infrastructure so as to impart quality education.

The government will make more efforts in future towards infrastructural and academic development of the college, the chief minister said. He mainly stressed on the need of achieving practical education and said, “Only academic knowledge is not enough but practical education is also necessary. One has to build himself up as a human in society.”

The Chief Minister advised the parents to be mindful of their children to keep them away from the reach of drugs.

Meanwhile, the state education minister Ratan Lal Nath said that the Tripura government has made education free of cost for the girls in the degree colleges. He said, “Tripura is the first state in the country which launched Rs. 2000 social pension and no other state in the country has this.”

The Education Minister Ratan Lal Nath highlighted that the state government has invested a huge amount of money in the infrastructure development of schools and colleges in the last four years.

“The present state government is playing its role responsibly towards development of human resources. It is possible to build human resources through proper education and improved healthcare services,” Nath said, adding that the government is giving equal importance to these two factors.

He said that there are 128 pre-primary schools in the state at present. 21 colleges out of 25 colleges in the state have been recognized under NAAC. ‘Lakhsya’ scheme has been started for national level skill development for students of the state. he said, Master Degree Courses in Bengali and English languages have been started in six General Degree Colleges, he said.

Renovating the old Teachers’ Training College, Tripura government has built the general degree college at the cost of over rupees one crore as committed in the budget this year. The five basic subjects of the arts stream including compulsory Bengali and English will be taught here from this academic session that began last month.
