Acting on a tip-off BSF troops on Tuesday seized a huge quantity of “Bidi” that was supposed to be smuggled to Bangladesh, an official said. The incident took place bordering Kailashahar, the district headquarters of Unakoti district.
According to BSF sources, the total quantity of “Bidis” seized on Tuesday would be near 2.5 lakh sticks having a market cost of over a lakh rupees.
Local sources said the police of Kailashahar police station was well aware of the fact that huge quantity of Bidi was being smuggled from the bordering town to the other side of the fencing but did not take action. The matter came to light after BSF conducted the operation and seized the smuggling ready consignment.
Some sources alleged that the police officials intentionally offered freedom to the smugglers and helped them get their things passed easily. The BSF was quite disappointed with police inaction and Tuesday’s raid could be seen as fallout of that.
Meanwhile, the growing mistrust between the police and BSF reached such a scale that the BSF Jawans after completing all the formalities carried the seized materials to the Custom office for submission.
According to a BSF statement the consignment was seized from a three wheeler stationed in close proximity to the police station. The driver however succeeded to escape.
