The Airport Authority of India (AAI) is embarking on an ambitious plan to resume the operation of abandoned Kailashahar Airport in North Tripura under the Unakoti district soon.
Officials of the AAI including Director Rajiv Kapoor, Officiating Airport Director, Agartala MBB Airport S D Barman and others took a chopper to land at the abandoned airport at Kailashahar on Wednesday noon and carried an inspection in and around the airport to find out the feasibility of land acquisition for the expansion of the airport.
Kailashahar Municipal councilor Nitish De, DCM Jayanta Jamatia, and other administrative officials of Unakoti district accompanied the AAI officials.
After inspecting the airport the officials sat for a meeting at Unakoti District Magistrate Office. A Series of issues were discussed in the meeting which included the land acquisition process for the airport expansion.
Ending the meeting the municipal councilor Nitish Deb informed that according to the decision a total of 700 meters of land will be acquired from the Northern part of the airport, following which at least 22 families will be compensated accordingly. He also said that another 70 meters of land will be acquired from the Western part of the airport for building the Airport Authority Office and a parking zone of the airport.
On the other hand, the AAI Director Rajiv Kapoor informed that with the utmost effort of Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb, the airport shall be made operational soon. At first, necessary lands will be acquired for the expansion of the airport and later boundary walls will be constructed, adding to this he informed that due to the existence of Manu river the land cannot be acquired from the Southern part of the airport, following which a portion of land will be acquired from the Northern part for expansion of runway.
